Owen's appointment at the HEAR Center
Owen had his first appointment at the HEAR Center yesterday. During his appointment, he had some testing in the hearing booth. This was his first time in a hearing booth, all his other test were seeing the response of the nerves. Most of the time children are not put in to the booth until they are 7 months old. Owen is almost 8 months but for all doctor appointments, except for vaccinations, the boys are judged on their corrected age of 4 months. So, Owen did okay in the booth but did not seem to care to give them the responses they wanted. He would respond to their noises but only when it would startle him. He responded better to voices than noises. So, they know Owen could hear much better than he was showing because children that have a good bit of hearing loss do not respond with a startle. They have decided to wait three more months and have him tested again in the sound booth. This will make him more age appropriate allowing them to get a much better idea of his hearing loss. The good thing with Owen is that one of his ears can hear perfectly, so waiting to make sure they get the hearing aid for the other ear just right, is not hurting Owen in terms of hearing sounds and brain development. Yes, his hearing aid will definitely help him with sound localization and speech but waiting a little bit of time should not cause much of a delay for him. Nathan's appointment is not until August 3rd. Since we live so close we have told them if they have a cancellation we would be glad to jump in at any time. So, I will update you on Nathan either August 3rd or a little sooner.
