Tuesday morning we had a follow-up visit with our pulmonologist, Dr Lozano. Owen has been doing very well with his breathing and his doctor was pleased. Owen has not been sleeping well lately and since his doctor also does sleep issues I decided to mention Owen's problems. Not to my surprise we ended up with a sleep study. It just so happened there was an opening for a sleep study last night (Tuesday). So, Owen and I were off to Children's Hospital for the evening. I have never experienced a sleep study, so it was a totally new experience for both of us. Owen was hooked up to 32 electrodes, a saturation monitor, a waist belt, a chest belt and a snore mic. Needless to say, he was not a happy camper.
This morning I talked with his doctor before we were discharged. He confirmed that Owen is sleeping horribly....or really not resting at all. They noticed his sleeping was greatly improved with the oxygen they put on him during the study. Owen has really bad sleep apnea. Every kid has pauses in their breathing while they are sleeping but apparently Owen has tons of them. Dr Lozano thinks that it is related to his prematurity and Owen will probably grow out of it. Just to make sure there is not something else we are missing, Owen will have an MRI in the next few weeks of his brain stem.
This evening all our new oxygen equipment was delivered. We were able to use the same company as the first time around, so it was nice to see a familiar face in our supplier, Ken. Hopefully Owen will have a good night sleep tonight!!
